1098-T Tax Form

If you are planning to file a U.S. tax return, you may be eligible for education tax credits by using Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1098T. If filing a U.S. tax return is NOT required or not planned, IRS Form 1098T will not be provided in January, and related communications can be disregarded.

For more information about eligibility, see IRS Publication 970. USC cannot provide tax advice. For additional information, contact your tax adviser or the IRS.

How Do International Students Request a 1098-T Tax Form?

All students enrolling in courses at University of Southern California agree to receive their 1098T electronically. Forms are prepared in January and will be available for viewing in ECSI by January 31st. As soon as your form is ready, ECSI will email you instructions for downloading it from their website. There is no need to update the address listed on the 1098T, as the IRS does not require it.

How Do International Students Update their SSN or ITIN?

Log in to Experience USC, navigate to the profile icon, and select ‘My Profile’. Locate the Personal Info section and click Edit. Scroll to the My SSN/ITIN section to report your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer ID number (ITIN) no later than December 31 of the tax year. Once your SSN/ITIN is added, you will receive a 1098-T for every future year in which you have qualified transactions. If you provide your ITIN/SSN after January 1st, your 1098T form will be updated within 5 business days. You will receive an email notification when the form is ready.
